Kaakka Kaakka Kovaiyai Kaakka - Protect Kovai - awareness programme

Even those who do not believe in God, have to believe in Nature. Because, nobody can say that we can live without the ‘Pancha Boothas’, ( i.e. Air, Water, Sky, Fire and Earth ) this was the underlying thought that was left in the minds of those who attended “Kaakka Kaakka Kovaiyai Kaakka”, an awareness programme against pollution organised here on Thursday to mark Gandhi Jayanthi.

Siruthuli, Residents’ Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC), Kural, Karam and Bharathiar University jointly organised the mass prayer programme at five venues – VOC Park grounds, PSG College of Technology, Sowdeswari Vidyalaya, Chokkampudur, Shri Nehru Vidyalaya, and Coimbatore Market Committee campus, where Mahatma Gandhi had planted a tree.

The event was to sensitise the people of Coimbatore on the problem of pollution and to create a resolve to tackle the problem together, according to the organisers. It was designed in such a way that there was not a single dull moment. Even the most passive participant would have gone home a richer person in terms of environmental awareness.

Prior to the start of the event, floral tributes were paid to the photograph of Mahatma Gandhi. At the Coimbatore Market Committee campus, floral tributes were paid to the tree planted by him.

Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy lit the lamp at VOC Park grounds at 9 a.m. to officially mark the opening of the event at all the venues. What followed was a potpourri of motivation speeches, concept speeches on the “Pancha Boothas”, and skits, all interspersed with silent prayers sessions. The speakers at the venues were Tamil Aruvi Maniyan, T. Rajaram, Sumathi, and Parveen Sulthana. Students from various colleges and schools staged inspiring skits on social topics, relevant to the event’s theme.

Among the general public who attended were industrialists, academicians, social workers, etc., besides the Collector V. Palanikumar and Corporation Commissioner V.K. Shanmugam. School and college students had come in large numbers. It was heartening to see them squatted on the ground and attend the whole event. They participated with total involvement and without any form of distraction – the first step towards sensitisation. A deed well done on Gandhi Jayanthi.
