Rain Blasted The City

The Coimbatore Corporation grappled with resentment across the city on Tuesday, over the flooding on Monday night following heavy rain. While the people blamed the Corporation for not taking measures, Mayor R. Venkatachalam blamed water-logging on the abuse of storm water drains.“Debris, mud and garbage cause blocks in the drains almost everywhere in the city.

“We found this menace to be the main reason, during our visit to various areas on Tuesday morning,” he said. The Mayor pointed out that people inflicted harm on themselves by using the drains as a garbage dump. When a building was demolished, a portion of the debris was dumped in the drains to create access for lorries to take out the rest. And, it was not removed even after the demolition was completed. Such blocks in the drains led to rain water stagnating on the roads.

Referring to the flooding because of clogged drains, he said, “This is what happens to one’s own residential area if one dumps garbage in the storm water drains.” Besides, the entire compound in every residential premises (individual house or apartment) had a concrete surface. And, there was no proper rainwater harvesting structure. This led to rain water being let onto the road. “This, naturally, led to flooding,” he pointed out.
