100% Literacy Soon

With the Coimbatore Central Prison all set to get the examination centre status from the Directorate of Government Examinations for conducting Standard VIII, X and HSLC examinations, the prison authorities here are hopeful of achieving cent per cent literacy soon. Superintendent of Central Prison, Coimbatore Range, P. Govindaraju, told that with the guidance of Deputy Inspector-General of Prisons, Coimbatore Range, S.K. Narayanamoorthy, a proposal was mooted for getting the examination centre status.

The proposal was in final stages and a formal approval was expected within a few days. With the approval, a first batch of 50 prisoners would be taking their Standard VIII examination at the prison, he said. “The prison has convict prisoners who are graduate degree holders. They can provide the basic education to illiterate prisoners and enable them to appear for the Standard VIII examination,” he added.

Of the given 2,200 population at the prison, nearly 70 per cent was already literates and the remaining would be brought under the present system of education and examination for achieving a 100 per cent literacy rate. The prison already had centres for conducting open university courses for the inmates.
