Coimbatore: In the wake of terror attacks in Mumbai on Wednesday night, the Coimbatore city police have mobilised commando trained police personnel to ensure swift reaction in the event of an emergency. The move, which will provide round-the-clock armed guards for vital installations, is a precautionary measure.
City Police Commissioner, K.C. Mahali told that there had been no pointed intelligence about threats to the security of Coimbatore. Mr. Mahali said that a ‘Special Operations Group’ comprising 30-personnel trained in commando operations has been formed and would be led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime – East), K. Rajendran.
These personnel were imparted commando training as part of the capacity building exercise. The city police are geared up to handle any emergency and there was no need for fear or panic, Mr. Mahali added. The situation is under close watch by special teams under the supervision of Deputy Commissioners of Police, S. Rajendran (Law and Order), K. Shanmugavel (Crime and Traffic) and P. Nagarajan (Headquarters). In addition to the local police and special operations group, 30 commandos, trained in all kinds of warfare, have been mobilised from the Special Task Force (STF) at Sathyamangalam. Given the nature of attacks unleashed in Mumbai, the police have alerted all major hotels to put in place a tight security system.
Anti-Sabotage Teams (AST) of Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS) of the city police have been kept in a state of readiness. Security at the Coimbatore Airport has also been strengthened. The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department has kept seven fire service vehicles ready, while the Dean of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, V. Kumaran has been asked to keep the hospital ready to handle any emergency. Three companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Vellalore are prepared to render any assistance to the city police.
DIG of Police, Central Training College II of the CRPF has also kept his reinforcements ready. Assistant Commandant of the CRPF in charge of Central Prison Security has been put on alert and the security around the jail premises has been strengthened. All vital installations and places of public congregation such as the airport, railway stations, bus stands and all vital installations have also been brought under round-the-clock armed security. The City Police have tightened vigil in all the eight check posts on all arterial and feeder roads with armed police personnel, 27 patrol vehicles and 37 motor cycle patrols on the road.
