Clash Passed In Coimbatore Law Collage .....
Students of the Government Law College near Marudhamalai on the outskirts of the city resorted to a violent agitation on Thursday damaging college properties to protest against the alleged “failure” of the police in Chennai to prevent the clash between two groups of students at the law college there on Wednesday. As many as 69 students in Coimbatore indulged in the violence accusing the Law University and the Chennai City Police of failing to prevent the clashes in Chennai.
They said both the authorities and the police had known about the possibility of a clash but failed to take appropriate action. Three students were seriously injured in the Chennai incident. The students blamed the police for remaining mute spectators, especially even when an unconscious student was lynched by an unruly mob. Many students sat at the college quadrangle boycotting examination which was going on in the college while a section of them resorted to vandalism damaging glass panes, destroying tube lights, fans, bathroom fittings and furniture in the college. Students opposed any effort by the police to enter the premises.
A group of police personnel led by Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, G. Karthikeyan, Additional Superintendent of Police, S. Jayapandian, Deputy Superintendents of Police, P. Thangadurai and K. Kumarasamy were deployed at the gates of the college. DIG of Police, Coimbatore Range, P. Sivanandi also visited the place. Police diverted the traffic from Bharathiar University to Marudhamalai. Following a complaint from the college principal the police entered the premises and asked the agitating students to disperse.
The police said legal action would be initiated against the students for damaging government properties. The police removed all students to a wedding hall. Mr. Sivanandi said assessment of the damage was underway. Police have strengthened security in the college. The police later released the students under the provisions of 151 of Criminal Procedure Code. A separate case has been registered under Sections 147 and 148 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code and section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Public Properties Damages Prevention Act.
