Jail For Civic Official
Chief Judicial Magistrate and Special Judge for Vigilance and Anti-Corruption cases, R.A. Balasubramanian, on Wednesday convicted and sentenced a former Junior Engineer of the Town Planning Department of the Coimbatore Corporation to five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.62,000 in a graft case. If he defaults in paying the fine, he will have to undergo one more year of rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, M. Shankaranarayanan was trapped by the DVAC in December 2000 when he demanded and accepted Rs.31,000, allegedly as bribe, for sanctioning a building plan. A case was registered against him under Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988.
