Dr Palanivelu Got Rare Honour
A city based laparoscopic surgeon received recognition from the reputed General Medical Council (GMC) to perform laparoscopic surgery all over the UK.The recognition to Dr Palanivelu, Director, Gem Hospital and Research Centre, was considered as a rare honour to an Indian surgeon to get GMC certification without taking any training in that Country.According to the UK Law, GMC certification was mandatory to practice surgery in that country and this normally would be given for those completing required training at various UK-based university hospitals, a hospital release claimed today.
Palanivelu was assigned to teach British surgeons in the Gastro Intestine advance laparoscopic surgery, it said.Worked as a professor in Coimbatore Medical College for a decade, Palanivelu has introduced the concept of laparoscopic surgery in South India in 1991. He has also developed unique techniques for treating hernia, Hydatid cyst of liver, obesity, cancer of food pipe through laparoscopy.
