Over 100 presspersons, including lensmen and electronic media cameramen, on Tuesday staged a demonstration in the city, protesting the attack on three TV journalists during a recent clash between two groups in Vettakaranpudur, near Pollachi. They shouted slogans and demanded that the culprits be brought to book and detained under the Goondas Act.
The demonstration was organised by the Coimbatore Press Club. The reporters, belonging to Makkal TV, Tamilan TV and a local tv cameraman were allegedly assaulted by one of the groups,who snatched their cameras and set it on fire on December 21 night while they were recording the clash. The clash had broken out during a road roko following rumours about the death of children allegedly after they were administered polio drops. Coimbatore Press Club President, V.S. Palaniappan, urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide protection to presspersons, since attacks on their fraternity were increasing day by day.
