PDK Activists Prevented

More than 30 activists of the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam were prevented by the city police from reaching the Coimbatore Airport on Sunday afternoon to show black flags to Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony. The Minister was heading for the airport to board a special flight to New Delhi after taking part in a function at Palakkad in Kerala.

Police said 34 activists were stopped at the Avanashi Road-Vilankurichi Road junction itself and taken away. They wanted to show black flags in protest against the military action in Sri Lanka. Seven activists of the Adhi Tamizhar Peravai were also removed by the police when they attempted to stage an agitation in front of the Central Telegraph Office on Bank Road. The Peravai had planned agitations at all district headquarters to express solidarity with Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalan, who was on a fast to demand an end to the military action in Sri Lanka. The activists of both the organisations were let off later, police said.
