Coimbatore Prison Sanctioned For Conducting ClassX Exam

About 100 prison inmates in Tamil Nadu will be appearing for the Class X board examinations commencing on Wednesday. They have received their hall tickets. The exams will be conducted in two centres, at the Puzhal and Coimbatore prisons, based on the sanction given by the state education department. Although the prison department had recommended that at least four examination centres be provided — in Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi and Coimbatore — education officials sanctioned only two.

“The identified prisoners were given special training to prepare for the Class X exams. The inmates were given slates and chalk. With help from NGOs, they are being provided notebooks and textbooks,” DGP (Prisons) R Nataraj said. The prison department had started on Republic Day this year a 100% literacy programme in all jails in the state. Not only were the inmates motivated to study, several of them informed prison officials about their willingness to appear for the Class X board examination.
