Expert In Locating Missing People

The members of the special task force assigned to nab forest brigand Veerappan once enlisted the services of an astrologer to locate the ever-elusive sandalwood smuggler. A powerful Tamil Nadu politician performed the ‘Gaja Poojai’ at the behest of a Kerala-based astrologer. The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) runs a school where the only criterion for a student seeking admission is his horoscope. The list is endless, and it only goes to show how astrology is serious business in the state -- almost an integral part of life for the powerful as well as the powerless.

Tamil Nadu is also the only state where astrology takes different avatars. There are astrologers who read the past and the future by looking into your ear and even foot. KPS Vijay, for example, is a foot-reader who claims he got the gift from Lord Bhairava in a dream. A native of Avalpoonthurai, 11 km from Erode, Vijay claims to have examined over 4,000 big toes and the long list of his clients supposedly includes actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth. According to him, there are 14 types of toes, each having 27 to 55 lines, and studying them can give far more accurate results than astrology.

Then there is Arjunan, a native of Coimbatore, who is an expert in locating missing people by looking into a beetle leaf. Arjunan, who is now in his eighties, clarifies he is not an astrologer. “When a client gazes into the leaf, he should be able to see the images of Lord Ganesha and Anjaneya. Only then the technique will succeed,’’ he said. Soothsayer-turned-politician K Natarajan looks straight into your ears rather than your eyes. “Shape of the ears speaks volumes about a person. Since the shape is based on karma in the previous birth, it can also tell what the future holds for a person,” he said.
