Swine Flu Identified @ Coimbatore

A 27-year-old man and his 52-year-old mother got themselves admitted to the quarantine ward at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital here on Sunday following symptoms that were similar to those of swine flu A(H1N1). Persistent fever and cough made them volunteer to get admitted to the hospital, Dean (in-charge) V. Kumaran said.

The man was based in New Jersey in the U.S. and had been suffering from fever and cough there. He was, however, cleared for travel to Coimbatore where his mother was living. He had reached Bangalore by flight via Dubai and then travelled by car to Coimbatore recently, Dr. Kumaran explained in reply to a question on how such a case could have passed through the screening centre at the Coimbatore airport without getting noticed. As the fever and cough did not subside for four to five days, they approached the district health authorities who referred them to the hospital, Dr. Kumaran said. “Throat swabs and blood serum samples have been collected and sent to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases in New Delhi for tests to identify the viral load,” Dr. Kumaran said. “We will get the results in 24 to 40 hours,” he said.
