China to Maruthamalai to learn English !


From China to the foothills of Marudamalai, it had been a unique learning experience for the small batch of Chinese students who just completed their BA in English at the Bharathiar University (BU).This is the second batch from China, consisting of 13 students, who took up the course for one year at the university as per a pact signed between BU and a Chinese university for exchange of students and faculty.“The first batch consisted of nine students, who got good placements in China,” claimed BU vice-chancellor Prof C Swaminathan, adding that they were planning to take 50 students next time.

The Chinese students were jubilant at the farewell party held on Tuesday for them. “The learning experience at the varsity was fantastic. We have really learnt a lot during the course and are thankful to all the teachers who helped us learn English,” Zhangyong, one of the students, told Express.The syllabus includes listening, speaking and reading skills, besides literature. The students were also trained in public speaking.According to Chen Desheng, the classes were interactive and both teachers and students actively took part in the learning process. He is now pursuing his postgraduation in English. “Apart from learning English, we learnt the culture of Tamil Nadu and its language, I loved it a lot,” he said.“Around five have expressed their interest in pursuing post-graduation at the varsity itself,” said Prof R Palanivel, head, Department of English.
