Model IT Township planned in Coimbatore
Maran Launches Initiative For Model IT Townships
To ease people and traffic congestion in metros across India, Union IT minister Dayanidhi Maran today launched Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's initiative to develop integrated model townships for the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and IT industries.
Addressing a press conference at a suburban hotel on the sidelines of the three day NASSCOM Summit, Maran disclosed that these townships would obliterate people from leaving their hometowns in search for jobs. "The move will take the pressure off bigger cities and decentralize infrastructure requirements."
The ministry has developed over 25 tier two cities for developing these townships. Maran however, refused to divulge more details on the project and said, "We have just launched the initiative. We are yet to work out the logistics for the project." The Union IT ministry is working with its counterparts in the urban development department to chalk out details and draft plans. Brainstorming sessions on how to develop infrastructure and how to expand these cities in a phased manner are already underway.
The cities earmarked for the project are Ahmedabad, Bubaneshwar, Bhopal, Chandigrah-Mohali, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow-Kanpur, Panaji, Mangalore, Mysore, Nagpur, Thiruvananthpuram, Vishakhapatnam, Agra, Guwahati, Indore, Patna, Siliguri-Jalpaiguri and Simla among other state capitals and cities. Maran said, "Infrastructure in terms of better and more airports, particularly in the country's Tier II and Tier III cities, and special modern greenfield townships need to become a part of our future roadmap." He was referring to the recent note from the PMO, whose initiative was launched today.
He added that these cities would build support for the export markets and also address increasing domestic needs for talent. India's domestic market opportunity is becoming huge as IT deployment across industries gets underway, as organizations and individuals become sophisticated users of technology and as government projects that take IT to the masses achieve fruition, he remarked.
