Coimbatore lures 15000 Cr investment

Coimbatore region industries likely to attract Rs 15,000 cr

Industrial investments in Coimbatore district in the fields of manufacturing, infrastructure and information technology sectors is expected to go up to Rs 15,000 crore in the coming few years. According to K Thangaraj, chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore zone, already 82 projects with an estimated investment of Rs 7,352 crore were under way.

Some of these have been announced but not implemented yet, some are being carried out and a few others are nearing completion. They include infrastructure projects, textiles, auto components and engineering in the manufacturing space. Investments have been made by Indian companies, foreign firms and some joint ventures as well, he said.

Thangaraj said industries in the region ‘‘have to move up to the next orbit in terms of size, turnover, global business and even business outlook to take maximum advantage of the economic boom and liberal government policies and procedures’’.

CII would introduce new steps and programmes to explore uncovered opportunities in China, Latin America, Taiwan and southern Africa through value-added trading activities and support services, he said, while explaining the new roadmap CII would follow for the industrial development of the zone in the coming months.

He said the flow of fresh investments would require an additional one lakh industrial manpower. 'The industry which is already facing difficulties in getting skilled manpower, needs to strategise for the emerging demand’. CII would work together with educational institutions in the region for this, he added.
