The Madukkarai Police Station with a vast jurisdiction (nearly 40 villages) will be bifurcated. They were struggling to regulate traffic, especially in the event of accidents, on the busy NH-47 from Salem to Kochi besides maintaining vigil along the border.
The aim to upgrade the outpost at KG Chavadi is to maintain vigil along the bordering areas of Tamil Nadu to prevent smuggling of public distribution system rice from Tamil Nadu to Kerala, similarly illicit arrack from Karnataka via Coimbatore and movement of inter-State criminals. A sub-inspector will head the police station with adequate police personnel and it will come under the supervision of the inspector of police, Madukkarai.
Preliminary arrangements for establishing the outpost are being made by the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, K. Rajendran, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore Range, M.N. Manjunatha and Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, A.T. Duraikumar. The Government has also sanctioned seven traffic police stations on the highways with three in the Coimbatore range - at Perumanallur (Coimbatore district) and at Bhavani (Erode district) on NH-47 besides one at Kangeyam in Erode district on NH-67 connecting Nagappatinam with Mysore via Erode, Coimbatore and Udhagamandalam.
The other traffic police stations will be at Puduchattiram in Namakkal district, Omalur, Sankagiri and Attur in Salem district. The primary objective of the police stations is to regulate traffic and reduce accidents besides keeping the highway criminals at bay. Each of these stations will have one inspector, two sub-inspectors, three head constables, three grade I constables and six grade II constables besides one driver. The outpost at the Tirupur Railway Station is being upgraded into a full-fledged railway police station.
In order to enhance manpower availability proportionate to the population, the Government has sanctioned upgrade of the Uthangarai Police Station in Krishnagiri district from Type IV to Type II and the Madikonpalayam and Krishnapuram police stations in Dharmapuri district into Type III from Type IV.Earlier, the Type IV police stations had a total manpower of 29, including officers, and now the strength is being increased to 56 in Type II and 42 in Type III police stations.
