90% of self help group get placement

Trained youth in self-help groups get jobs

Skill development is through tie-ups with educational institutions and industries

Coimbatore:Over 9,000 youth self-help groups have been formed in the State during the last ten months, the Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Women Development Project, N. Muruganandam, said here on Saturday. The youth in these groups are trained through tie-ups with educational institutions or industries.Apart from the members of the groups, other youth are also trained and during the last four months about 4,000 of them have joined courses running from three to six months.

About 85 to 90 per cent of them get placement. "It is a demand-driven programme and during the next financial year the number of beneficiaries will be more than the number this year," he said.The State has 3.32 lakh women self-help groups. A poverty alleviation programme funded by the World Bank is also on in 15 blocks, he said. Mr. Muruganandam gave away certificates and appointment letters to students who had undergone skill training at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Industrial Training Centre here. They were trained in activities such as computer hardware maintenance, cell phone servicing, electrical work, lathe operation and fabrication. Most of the courses were for two months. Over 140 students received certificates.
