BA Criminology & Police Administration course soon in BU

Varsity offers help to de-stress police force

Coimbatore: The Bharathiar University has come forward to extend the services of expert faculties in its Psychology Department to de-stress the police force.

‘‘We are prepared to send our experts on a regular basis, say for a half-day session daily, in whichever centres the police force needs help to get rid of stress,’’ University Vice-Chancellor G Thiruvasagam told this website's newspaper.He added that the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone,Coimbatore, K Rajendran, had agreed to provide space for conducting the stress management sessions.

‘‘Whoever in the police force feels that he needs stress management, can avail of this facility. I have sought my people for a list of interested persons,’’ said Rajendran, claiming that already he had, to a certain extent, succeeded in bringing down the stress level among his force.The facilities and expertise in the university would also be thrown open to them as part of the extension programme of the university, the VC said.

The university was also set to launch BA Criminology and Police Administration course this academic year, which is subject to the approval of the syndicate, which meets later this month, he said.The university had also decided to extend 25 percent concession for police personnel across the State and also teachers who were willing to pursue any course under the distance education mode of the university.

The IG had already assured that 1,000 policemen would enroll for the criminology course in the first year, Thiruvasagam said.In addition to the existing courses, the university would introduce 17 PG courses, 21 UG courses, 19 diploma and 12 post diploma courses under the distance education scheme in 2007-08, the VC said.
