National Road Safety Council meeting in Coimbatore

Coimbatore, Mar 14: A two-day meeting of the National Road Safety Council, beginning here on April 7, would discuss various road safety measures to be adopted for reducing the increasing accidents, a top official in the Tamil Nadu transport department, said today.

The transport ministers, Director Generals of Police and members of State Road Safety Councils from all states would participate in the discussion to be chaired by Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T R Baalu, the State Transport Commissioner, C P Singh told reporters here.


About 150 delegates were expected to participate in the annual meeting, he said.
As far as Tamil Nadu was concerned, all the district collectors had been asked to collect comprehensive data of accidents and prepare a plan on road safety, Singh said.
On accident rate in Tamil Nadu, Singh said on an average the state was recording 9,000 to 10,000 deaths in about 50,000 accidents every year since 2002. However, incidents of accidents were on the decline during the last five years, he said.
