Coimbatore residents there will be no power cuts
Minister promises a summer sans power cutCoimbatore: Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy assured residents that there will be no power cuts this summer and the State has already suspended the sale of 1,500 MW to Maharashtra and Punjab with effect from March 1.
Talking to reporters here, he said the State was generating 10,211 MW against the demand of 8,500 MW. Windmills alone accounted for 3,200 MW and during the lean period — March 1 to May 15 — only 15 per cent of this would be available. To tide over the shortage, the Minister said that mills and cement factories had been requested to go for co-generation through captive means and give the surplus power to the State.
He said the Chief Minister requested the Union Power Minister to allocate 15 per cent of his quota to Tamil Nadu from Neyveli.
An additional 300 MW would be available from the Mettur reservoir.
The State was negotiating with a firm in Japan for a technology at Rs 6 crore per MW for setting up units for generating 10,000 MW.
