Indefinite strike from April 9

Coimbatore: Over 500 dyeing and bleaching units in Tirupur will indefinitely down their shutters from April 9 as they are not in a position to pay the fine imposed by the Madras High Court for discharge of effluents. The decision to go on indefinite strike was taken at an emergency meeting of the Dyers' Association of Tirupur (DAT) last evening, as the penalty would run into crores of rupees, DAT sources said today. The Court had ordered levy of a fine of six paise per litre of effluent discharged by the units from Jan one to Mar 31, eight paise from April and May 31 and 10 paise from June one to July 31.

DAT said the dyers had paid Rs 5 crore as fine last month alone. They said the dyers were not getting increased job working charges from garment manufacturers to meet and compensate the penalty being paid by them. The dyers had stopped operations for nearly 10 days from Jan one last in view of the fine imposed by the Court.Meanwhile, around 450 units in Karur district have also decided to stop production from April two onwards, the sources said.
