Sri Shakthi Engineering College get DRDO Project

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has sanctioned a collaborative research project, 'Design and Implementation of New Class of Non-linear Filters in 2D Signal/Image Processing', to Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore.

"The specific aim of the project is to study, develop, design and implement aspects of a new class of efficient non-linear filters that facilitate both the removal of pure impulse noise and impulse noises mixed with random noises for two dimensional signal/image procession applications," Dr N Krishnan, Head, Centre for Information Technology and Engineering, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, told reporters here last night.

The major portion of the research, proposed by the university and college, is being carried out by the Coimbatore based Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology, he said. Research is being carried out by organising scattered contributions in non-linear techniques in image processing till-date into a few homogeneous sectors and to develop a group of non-linear filters for the removal of pure impulse noise and impulse noise with random noise from 2D digital signals/images, he said.

The results of this Rs 35 lakh project would be used to improve restoration of degraded images for defence applications, internet, medical imaging and multimedia applications, Krishnan said.
