Bharathiar Univ. to set up Skill Training Schools for Poor
Coimbatore Bharathiar University will soon set up eight finishing schools to provide skill training to economically weaker students to help them get placement in corporate sector.G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of the university, told reporters on Tuesday that two colleges in Erode had agreed to act as Finishing Colleges. They were Kongu Arts and Science College and Vellalar College for Women. Besides, NGM College and Sree Sarawathi Thygaraja College, both at Pollachi, had agreed to impart this specialised training.In addition, remedial training in spoken English, personality development and other skills would be given for 30 days and would be extended to the Fifth Semester candidates at Rs. 500 to provide food and resource materials. "The main objective is to make the students competent to face aptitude tests and interviews".
The Vice Chancellor said that the resource persons for imparting training would be from top companies and those visiting the varsity for holding campus interviews. Dr. Thiruvasagam announced that the university would sanction Rs. one lakh initially to bear the expenses of the training and it would be enhanced according to the needs. He pointed out that 20 job fairs had so far been conducted by the university in which 55 companies had taken part and 2,790 of the 28,070 candidates who attended them were selected.
Dr. Thiruvasagam warned the colleges offering B.Ed, MBA and MCA without the approval of the university that the students from such institutions would not be allowed to appear for the university examinations. The institutions would also be directed to give explanation for the violations. He termed it a violation by the institutions if they had failed to obtain permission from the university to start the courses though they might have obtained the approval from the All-India Council of Technical Education.
He pointed out that the university had given its approval to 26 colleges for MBA, 34 colleges for MCA and 35 colleges for B.Ed. courses. He said the list of colleges and the courses they offered with recognition could be viewed from the university website www.b-u.ac.in .It was the responsibility of the students to verify the same before getting admission to the particular course and it would be futile to plead with the university later.
"The university cannot be held responsible for their ignorance". The inspection reports of the varsity for granting permission for the new colleges or new courses would be published on the website. Before starting a college or introducing a course, an expert committee from the university would inspect to see whether the colleges had adequate infrastructure. Based on the report, permission would be granted. However, if there were any allegations against the institutions that they did not continue to have the facility, they would be declared unqualified to offer the course.
