BU to offer 57 new courses

Coimbatore:The School of Distance Education of Bharathiar University will offer 57 new courses from the academic year 2007, its Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam has said.The two-year MBA programme would have new subjects like investment, hospital, retail, information system, entrepreneurship, and export management. The post-graduate courses would include criminology and police administration, journalism and mass communications, information technology, computer applications, medical science, and political science and public administration.The under-graduate courses would include clinical science, library science and retail management, besides others. Diploma courses would be offered in communication engineering, Tally software, taxation, nautical sciences and police administration, besides others. The Vice-Chancellor has announced a 25 per cent concession for all teachers and police personnel who were interested in pursuing any course in the distance education mode.

Lateral entry
Also lateral entry in the second year of a related degree course for diploma-holders has been made possible. Diploma-holders could gain admission into the second year of a related degree course, while post-graduate diploma-holders could seek admission into the second year of a related post-graduate degree.Regular stream graduate students would be permitted to pursue a parallel degree course of their choice through the distance education mode.Similarly, post-graduate students would be permitted to pursue a parallel post-degree course through the distance education mode.


"Regular and distance education students will have to take up a job-oriented diploma during the course of their degree study. The job-oriented diploma course of their choice will be offered to them free of cost. This is aimed at making them industry-ready, " Prof. Thiruvasagam said. The affiliated colleges have been sanctioned two new courses - B.Sc. and M.Sc. in information technology. The colleges have also been extended the conversion facility for courses that have become outdated. They could convert an already existing course into a new course by paying a fee of Rs. 25,000.
