Tirupur Municipality's Rs.32 Cr. basic amenities plan
Encouraged by the overwhelming response to the simplified scheme for regularisation of unapproved areas in the town, the Tirupur Municipality has chalked out a massive plan to the tune of over Rs. 32 crore to provide basic amenities to all the 142 unapproved layouts in its limits. The municipality has collected Rs. 7.07 crore as regularisation fee from 17,000 house sites in the town. According to a rough estimate, there are 18,900 plots in all the unapproved layouts and 90 per cent of them have paid the charges responding to the Government's latest scheme.Municipal Commissioner M. Ashokan says that they are planning a massive project to give infrastructure fillip to the neglected areas in a swift manner. "We want to establish drainage facility to all the areas. As many as 124 works, spread over all the wards in the town, will be taken up at a cost of Rs. 30.61 crore under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns," he said. The works will be carried out in the ensuing financial year with the Central and State Government grants. Besides Government assistance, the municipality will install 910 streetlights at a cost of Rs. 35 lakh in all the areas from its general funds. "We have asked the Electricity Board to prepare the estimate. Once the estimates are ready, the municipality will pay the amount," Mr. Ashokan adds.
The residents of unapproved areas are now getting water through lorries after they complained that they get water once a fortnight. "To improve water supply network, we are going to lay main pipelines to facilitate all the residents to get piped water supply at an outlay of Rs. 154 crore. Besides this, borewells will be sunk at a cost of Rs. 1 crore across the town," he said.
Work orders have been issued for the pipeline laying works. Municipal Chairman K. Selvaraj says once the works are executed all the unapproved areas will get basic infrastructure. Almost all the areas, including M.S. Nagar, Golden Nagar, Narayanapuram, Samundipuram, Karuvampalayam, Ayyan Nagar and Netaji Nagar will get the facilities.
