NIIT-providing IT-enabled education to schools

Learning concepts through animation

A child-friendly software makes teaching easier. It is based on guidelines given by National Council of Education Research and Training. It uses sound bytes, words and visuals.Learning has never been more exciting.Subjects are taught by animated characters and the lessons are accompanied by audio clippings and music.Under the Information Technology (IT) enabled education system, computer helps teaching. The students of Manbaul Uloom Matriculation Higher Secondary School look forward to the two computer-enabled classes in a week.

Exhibition
The school has adopted the system and also held an exhibition of the projects children had done on computers, recently."IT-enabled education creates interest in children in studies," said K. Balasubramaniyan, Area Technical In charge of NIIT- K12 Division, a company providing IT and IT-enabled education to schools. The company has tied up with a few schools in the city to provide such services. Based on the guidelines given by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), the software is aimed at enabling children understand difficult concepts more easily.

Helps teachers too
Created by experienced teachers, doctors and software programmers, the software is very child-friendly and makes the process of teaching easier for teachers too, Mr. Balasubramaniyan points out.The company provides the software to almost a dozen schools in the city."There are over 200 schools in the city, but not all of them are prepared to invest in these kind of new teaching methodologies," he adds.As the software is interactive, it captures the attention of the student. As it uses sound, words and visuals, students are encouraged to apply their minds to their lessons. They also retain more and are able to recollect what they have learnt, he says.Online tests that are conducted also generate excellent response from the students. They see the results immediately on screen and tend to remember the mistakes they committed.

"With this system of education, even homework can be dispensed with," Mr.Balasubramaniayan says.Students from Standard III to Standard IX of the school readied models of the projects they had already prepared in PowerPoint."This is to give them an opportunity to create models of their computer projects. This will only strengthen their grasp of the themes dealt with in the project," says P.A.M.Thambi, principal of the school
