Public Police Meet & Criticism

Police-Public interface on crime prevention and on the relations between the custodians of law and the people was held on Thursday at Pappanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore. The meeting was held as part of City Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan's initiative for crime prevention, a release from the police said. Meetings were being held at street corners to spread awareness among the public on various types of crime and ways to prevent them, it said. The police also distributed pamphlets that explained these.

Mr. Gandhirajan met the public at Thursday's meeting to speak on the efforts taken by the police and the need for people's co-operation. The people also provided some feedback on the police functioning and on what was required in their area to prevent crime. They wanted a liquor shop to be shifted and a police outpost and increased patrolling. They urged the police to streamline traffic at Pappanaickenpalayam.

Meanwhile The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has blamed the city police for the traffic snarls on Wednesday during the Thandumariamman Temple festival. "No announcement was made about the traffic diversion," the consumer body's secretary, K. Kathirmathiyon, said in a release. "Even the town bus drivers were not aware of the routes that could or could not be used," he said. Better planning could have helped avert this problem. In fact, the police announced traffic diversion on earlier occasions. But, nothing was done this time.
