The Resident Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) will organise a cleaning campaign at R.S. Puram in Coimbatore on April 8.According to its vice-president, G. Soundararajan, about 300 volunteers, including local residents, police, college students and the association members are expected to take part in the programme.Thiruvenkatasamy Road, Venkitasamy Road and Ponnurangam Road will be covered. This is one of the largest areas in the city with a mix of residential and commercial areas. Both need different solutions for waste management.
About three months ago the association formed "area sabha" and distributed dustbins free of cost to the commercial establishments. It is also encouraging them to use garbage bags so that they do not dump waste on the streets. Street committees have also been formed.Streets and roads of a total distance of more than three km will be covered in the cleaning campaign on Sunday. The project is already on in about 30 residential colonies. The local resident welfare associations organised cleaning campaigns once a month, he said.
