Summer Rain Uprooting the "Dead Trees" !
The last three days of gusty winds and summer showers resulted in uprooting of trees especially the "dead trees" in a number of places. This resulted in damage to vehicles besides snapping of power lines stressing the need for identifying and removing the dead trees before the onset of South-West monsoon, which is expected to set in by June. The gusty winds and rain led to uprooting of trees and snapping of power lines in Sai Baba Colony, R.S. Puram and on Bharathi Park Road on Thursday and Friday while the Saturday's rain led to uprooting of a tree on Dr. Balasundaram Road (RTO office). Another tree is waiting to fall any time. Mild gusty winds and even mild showers prove sufficient to bring down the trees in a precarious condition. The uprooting of dead trees during rainy season always damaged the parked vehicles or those on the move if they fell towards the road. In some cases, the trees had damaged the compound walls of the nearby buildings.
When the trees get uprooted, they result in bringing down the electric posts on either side of the tree snapping the power line, resulting in disruption of power supply for several hours. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials had to work overtime pumping in more manpower to re-erect the poles and restore power supply. On Saturday night alone many parts of the city went without power supply till midnight even as the staff struggled to restore snapped power lines at a number of places. The breakdown/fuse call office team had to attend one call after the other till Sunday morning.
