Teacher's role to mould students into worthy Citizens
Teachers have the responsibility to mould students into worthy citizens of the country, said G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University.Delivering the convocation address at the PPG College of Education, he exhorted the future teachers to carry out their responsibility of making students committed to the nation. The character of the nation depended on the character of the individuals, which could be shaped by teachers, he said. "Teachers should instil in students a sense of national consciousness."A teacher should not only instruct but also inspire students. They must be up-to-date with the current developments taking place in their area of specialisation. They would have to read new books so that the mind always remained fresh. A teacher should also possess excellent communication skills. Mere knowledge would not serve the purpose.He or she had to communicate and share with students the wealth of knowledge that he or she possessed. The teachers were also faced with the responsibility of restructuring educational goals, so as to make it more universal. Globalisation and increased competition had also created a need for education to be more universal, he said.Illiteracy and communal disharmony were the factors that led to children dropping out of school, Mr. Thiruvasagam observed.
