Training centre for Construction Workers
With acute shortage of workers in the construction sector, the local chapter of Builders Association of India (BAI) would set up a training centre in the city for construction workers. As there was a huge demand for certified workers, the proposed Rs 50 lakh centre would provide training in masonry, carpentry, plumbing and electrical works, G Ramamoorthi, chairman of BAI, Coimbatore, told reporters Coimbatore today. The centre would have a quality control lab to test the quality of construction materials and a library, and knowledge and skill upgradation among technical staff would be top priority at the centre, Ramamoorthi said. Productivity level of workers in India was as low as five to 20 per cent compared to western countries, G Srinivasan, newly elected chairman of the local chapter, said. R and D programmes would be undertaken to find innovative techniques and effective utilisation of machinery.
It was also proposed to open a school of construction management, to train engineers in project management. On the construction activities, Ramamoorthi said despite the boom in the sector for the last couple of years, the industry, confronted with the price increase of cement, steel and sand, was now facing price increase of jelly metal.
