Airport approach road to be improved
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is embarking on a proposal to improve the approach road for the airport from Avanashi Road at nearly Rs. 1.5 crore. The AAI proposal comes in the wake of the decision of the Kalapatty town panchayat to hand over the .9 km length of the road to the airport authority for improvement and future maintenance. The airport that has witnessed a spurt in passenger as well as aircraft movement has only a two-lane approach road with very basic facilities.Enough space is available on one side of the existing road to widen it into a four lane with spacious service lanes. Residents of various colonies on either side use the road besides the vehicles to and from the airport.
Airport Director K. Hemalatha said that the road would be improved into a four lane with two lanes for entry and two for exit. On either side, service lanes would be laid with adequate space for the flow of vehicles to the residential colonies.Preliminary assessment revealed that the space available was adequate for a four-lane road exclusively for the airport access as well as for the wide service roads on either side. Both at the Avanashi Road entrance as well as at the entry point of the airport parking lot, roundabouts would be created for circular movement of vehicles to ensure free flow of traffic. The road would have footpath and pavement shoulders on either side. Medians with greenery and adequate lighting would be provided taking into account the wide road space to be used by vehicles to and from airport besides the traffic on the service roads. The road would also have storm water drains.
