CCI to up cotton output in TN

To meet the growing demand for cotton following robust growth in the textile sector, the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), along with other research bodies from Coimbatore, has chalked out a programme to reach out to farmers in the region. “CCI has selected six villages with a total area of 110 acres covering 64 cotton farmers of Avinashi, some 40 km from Coimbatore. Avinashi cotton belt raises largely the medium staple Bunni and MCU-5 varieties and bulk of the cotton produced there is rain-fed. We intend to motivate the farmers on increasing yield,” a CCI spokesperson told ET.

According to data available with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), textile mills in TN require 60 lakh to 80 lakh bales per annum, whereas the state’s cotton output is hovering around 5-6 lakh bales. G K Sundaram, chairman of Lakshmi Mills, said: “With Egypt, the main producer of ELS cotton in the world, having stopped production, Indian farmers should take up cultivation of ELS cotton to meet the demands from the textile industry and export cotton.”

The CCI, with the assistance of Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR) and TNAU, plans to expose farmers to technology in areas such as soil, crop, pest management and also the potential of marketing ELS cotton for the textile mills. Inputs on seed would be provided by CICR while scientific and technical expertise would be offered by TNAU.
