The Tamil Nadu Government's Sericulture Department proposed to promote cluster approach to mulberry cultivation and enhance the area of cultivation by 10,000 acres in the current fiscal, a top official said today. Commissioner of Sericulture, Tamil Nadu, Harmandar Singh, told reporters here that 43 centres in 18 districts in the state had been identified and already preliminary exercise like convening farmers meet, creation of awareness campaign, etc has already been initiated.

The department would provide cultivators with the requisite technical support enabling them to cultivate mulberry, raise nurseries or go in for silk reeling at the cluster centres. At present, about 25,000 acres are under mulberry cultivation.Cocoon production had touched 7,900 tonnes in the fiscal ended on March 31,2007 from 5,200 tonnes, the previous year. "The current year target is set at 9,000 tonnes and by virtue of adding 10,000 acres afresh the target was easily achievable," he said.

Raw silk production had also increased to 1120 tonnes from 730 tonnes with bivoltine silk, a superior variety accounting for 26 percent of the production, the highest in the country. To a question, he said the department was focusing on post-cocoon processing and efforts were on to increase the number of reeling units with private participation as most of the farmers were mobilising the produce to neighbouring destinations in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Fiftythree cottage reeling units were given approval in the year 2008-07 on an investment of rs 2.05 lakh each and each of the unit was awarded rs 1.2 lakh by way of subsidy as brought under the Central Silk Board scheme. The department was also in the process of refurbishing or revitalizing sick reeling units and under this scheme at least 20 units would be revived in the current year.
