Kovai Book Fair on the VOC grounds

Books have a large role in making a man. One should develop the habit of reading, Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy said here on Wednesday.Inaugurating the Kovai Book Fair on the VOC grounds, he said that books were a treasure-trove of knowledge. He lamented the fact that reading habit had waned considerably. "People have moved away from the reading habit because of the influx of televisions. Television mostly provides only entertainment. It cannot substitute the role of a book. A book has a large role in making or moulding a human being," he said.

Commissioner of Police C.K. Gandhirajan said that such fairs would help children and youth develop interest in books. "A house without books is like a house without a window. Children should be brought up in the ambience of books; only then will they turn out into good human beings," he said. Mayor `Colony' R. Venkatachalam promised the Booksellers' and Publishers' Association of South India who were organising the book fair that certain concessions would be given to them as regards the use of space and rental for using the grounds. Industrialist Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetty, District Librarian V. Madheswaran, association's president Gandhi Kannadasan and secretary R.S. Shanmugam spoke. The fair would be open to the public from 11.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m.The entry for children up to 12 years of age would be free, while adults would have to pay Rs. 2.
