Locally grown tulips in Ooty

Udhagamandalam: A week from now when the curtain goes up on the two-day Rose Show at the Centenary Rose Park here visitors will get to see some locally grown tulips in the non-competition section thanks to the pioneering effort of a gardening enthusiast, Seema Suresh. When she was bitten by a desire to cultivate flowers which were hitherto not seen in the Nilgiris, her husband B. Suresh, Principal, J.S.S. College of Pharmacy, got her a few tulip bulbs from the United States of America about seven years ago. However, the attempt went in vain with the bulbs failing to germinate. Undaunted she made another attempt a couple of months ago with some bulbs brought by Dr. Suresh from the U.S. This time her efforts fructified. Speaking to The Hindu here on Saturday, Ms. Suresh said that she took special care of the bulbs and followed instructions. The result was gratifying. The tulips occupy a special place in her collection.Stating that the conditions here are conducive for growing a wide variety of flowers, Dr. Suresh added that he had brought 48 bulbs and all had germinated. He hoped tulips would be grown on a commercial basis here.
