Result of Corp's grievances redressal meeting

The Coimbatore Corporation's grievances redressal meeting for the people in Deputy Mayor N. Karthik's ward (No.16) on Monday yielded 101 petitions demanding various amenities. Good roads, removal of garbage and even door-to-door collection of waste were among the demands. The Corporation announced last week that the meeting would be held on Monday to know of the problems the people of this ward faced. The meeting was on the lines of the Mayor's Public Grievances Redressal Programme.

This programme took two wards at a time for receiving petitions and then announcing schemes and solutions at a later date. The grievances meeting at HUDCO Colony at Periyar Nagar, Karunanidhi Nagar (Sowripalayam area) and HUDCO Colony (Peelamedu) on Monday tried to know of the problems of a big ward that comprised areas located along both Avanashi Road and Tiruchi Road. These areas came under both the North Zone and East Zone of the Corporation."I need to know about all the problems the people in my ward face," Mr. Karthik said after the meetings held at the three places from 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. "Close to 500 people turned up at all these meetings and we received 101 petitions asking for various amenities," he said.Mayor R. Venkatachalam said: "The turnout itself proved that people were appreciative of our effort to take stock of the problems. We did not expect this response from the people."

Of the 38 petitions got from the people of Periyar Nagar, many requested for drainage in newly regularised layouts and door-to-door collection of garbage in these and other areas too. Two petitions called for widening of the Masakalipalayam Road.Roads and drainage formed the bulk of the demands in the 58 petitions from Karunanidhi Nagar and 17 from HUDCO Colony. The Corporation would take steps to meet these demands in a month, the Deputy Mayor said.Replies to individual petitioners, detailing the action taken on their petitions, would be sent through letters. A meeting would also be held at a central place for these three areas, to explain the Corporation's measures to solve the problems highlighted by the people. The grievances meeting proved lucky for 10-year-old Saini. Mr. Karthik said the girl weighed only 10 kg because of hormone deficiency and she needed Rs. 8,000 a month for medicines. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor gave her Rs. 1,000 each. With contributions from others, the girl got Rs. 15,000 to meet her treatment expenses."We will speak to service organisations such as Lions Clubs to fund her treatment," Mr. Karthik said.
