Series of raids for child labour

The Kovai Child Labour Abolition Support Society plans to organise a series of raids in the next few days to rescue and rehabilitate child workers in the district.According to an official in the society, 10 children were rescued from commercial establishments during raids conducted a few days ago in 220 establishments in Mettupalayam. Three of them had come for work only for the summer vacation. Since the units had employed child workers, though only on a temporary basis, cases had been booked against the establishments that employed them. All the rescued children were handed over to their parents and they would be enrolled in the special school to be opened in Mettupalayam in the first week of June.
The society planned to organise raids in different parts of the district jointly with other departments every week. It also proposed to open 24 more special schools to rehabilitate the rescued child workers by the end of next month. The district already had 16 such schools, with an intake of 20 to 25 children each. The children attended the special school for one year and then joined the regular school. The raids would increase awareness among commercial establishments against employment of children. In many cases, children went to work only during vacation. The raids would bring down this practice too, he said. Though these children were employed only on a temporary basis some of them dropped out of schools after the vacation and continued to work. During the raids, action was taken even against units that employed children only during the vacation period.
