Slum Clearance Board obtained Central approvel
The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board proposes to develop two model towns in Chennai in which over 18,000 tenements will be constructed to resettle slum families residing elsewhere in the city, Minister for Housing Suba. Thangavelan said.Out of them 9,000 will be constructed in south Chennai, while north Chennai would get 9,936, the Minister told the Assembly.The tenements with plinth area of 270 sq.ft with all infrastructure, including piped water supply, would be constructed for the slum families living along the river and road margins. The Board had also decided to construct multi-storey tenements with lift facility wherever it was possible, he said.A total of 14 neighbourhood schemes for developing 1,356 acres of land at an estimated cost of Rs.198 crore for the benefit of 4,718 families all over the State, including those in Chennai and Sholinganallur, would be taken up during the current financial year.
The dilapidated tenements in Vyasarpadi and Kuppaimedu, which were taken up for reconstruction utilising specific needs grants under XII Finance Commission, would be completed this year, he added.Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the Board proposed to create a slum-free Chennai by 2013. It had also obtained the approval of the Central Government for the construction of 15,342 tenements in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore at a total cost of Rs.394.68 crore, he added.
