Coimbatore " The Costliest City" in TN !!!

ALWAYS KNOWN for its affluence and traditional wealth, Coimbatore has emerged as the most expensive city in Tamil Nadu in terms of average inflation rate for urban non-manual employees and industrial workers for the last financial year. Tiruchi reported the lowest average rate of inflation for last year.
According to a data analysis by Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), average inflation in terms of the consumer price index for industrial workers during the period April-March 2006-07 was highest in Coimbatore at 5.9%. It has more than doubled from 2.1% in the previous year. It was followed by Salem with 5.8% (1.5%), Chennai 3.6% (3.5%), Coonur 3.5% (2.6%), Madurai 3.1% (2.8%). Tiruchi reported a sharp drop in inflation at 1.8% (6.3%) last year.
In terms of inflation for consumer price for urban non-manual employees (CPI-UNME), Coimbatore saw a sharp rise at 8.1% last year over 4.6% in 2005-06. Salem stood next with 5% (4.1%), followed by Chennai 4.8% (4.4 %), Tiruchi 4.8% (3.7%) and Madurai 4.2% (4.6%). The analysis showed that inflation for industrial workers was lowest in Tiruchi at 1.8% in contrast to the fact that the centre witnessed highest rise in CPI-IW in the corresponding period in 2005-06. Except for Tiruchi, all other centres in the state saw a higher rise in inflation against the corresponding period in the previous year. Last year, inflation in terms of consumer price index for agricultural labourers was lower in the state (4.3%) compared to 7.8% recorded in the country. Food index in the state increased by 2.9% in contrast to a decline of 1.5% in the previous year. However, the increase in food index is lower than the hectic increase at all India level by 8.9% over 3.7% in 2005-06.
