'Education awareness campaign' by Anbu illam

Don Bosco Anbu Illam will launch an `education awareness campaign' on June 15 to create awareness on the need for educating children in rural areas.Covering 16 villages in and around the district, the campaign will focus on motivating parents to send their children to school and drop outs to re-enrol themselves in school, said Fr. Christopher Jayaraj, Director of the Illam. More than 650 children would be benefited from this programme, he added. "The villages that have been selected for the programme are backward and very few children complete their education. Most of them drop out of school and are sent for work by the parents," he said.

The parents, a majority of them daily-wage labourers, were themselves illiterate and some of them didn't mind their children dropping out of school. Alandurai, Somanur, Mangalapuram, Udumalpet and Kurumbampalayam were some of the villages that would be covered. Don Bosco Anbu Illam had centres in these villages, which offered evening classes to the students. This year, six more villages had been identified, Fr. Jayaraj said. Counselling programmes for the parents would also be conducted.

The campaign would also include distribution of free educational material for the children. They would be provided notebooks, stationery materials, and a small amount of the school fees.Students from class I to X would be eligible for the assistance.A similar school enrolment campaign was launched in the city on Wednesday by the Centre for Social Education and Development.
