Pillor water supply will resume only on Saterday

With drinking water supply under the Pilloor scheme set to resume only on Saturday, the Coimbatore Corporation is making arrangements to provide water to areas that are severely hit by scarcity, according to Mayor R. Venkatachalam. After a visit to Velliyangadu on Thursday where the Pilloor line burst on Wednesday and disrupted supply, the Mayor said that the Corporation was using some of the old Siruvani scheme lines to some areas that were now under the Pilloor scheme. Certain pockets of Ramanathapuram and Ganapathy were under the Siruvani scheme till the Pilloor project was implemented.

But, the pipelines in these areas still had a link with the main supply line of the Siruvani scheme. This was handy now to compensate for the lack of Pilloor water supply. For those areas without this facility, water was being supplied in Corporation and private lorries. The Mayor, however, said that supply to all Pilloor scheme areas was stopped soon after the burst was reported.Actually, normal supply would resume only after the damaged line was replaced. Water would be provided through old Siruvani lines and lorries only to those areas that had not got supply even before the pipe burst.

The Mayor visited the burst site along with Deputy Mayor N. Karthik, East Zone chairman S.M. Samy, City Engineer V. Raju and other officials.“Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board officials supervising the repairs assured us that these would be over by Friday evening and that pumping of water would begin at night. So, we are hopeful of regular supply resuming in the city on Saturday,” the Mayor said. The Mayor said that he requested the water board officials to identify the problem that caused the bursts and leaks in the main line.“As this happens often and disrupts supply, we want the problem to be solved on a permanent basis,” he said.

“Leaks or bursts seem to occur at every 10 ft. Something should be done to ensure that the water hammer pressure does not occur.”The Mayor said that the improvement in storage in the Siruvani Dam was helping the Corporation manage the problems caused by the Pilloor line burst.Supply under the Siruvani scheme also was reduced two days ago when trees uprooted by gusty winds snapped power lines and affected water treatment at the plant near the dam.Regular treatment and supply resumed on Thursday.
