'Road Safety Patrol' by students along with Police
As part of regulating traffic in school zones, a novel system has been launched here by involving students of respective schools and colleges. In the first phase, eight schools in the Corporation limit have been selected for 'Road Safety Patrol' (RSP) with 30 students, both boys and girls in uniform, manning the gate and controlling traffic.
The initiative for the system was taken by Police Commissioner Dr C K Gandhirajan, who has succeeded in regulating the increasing traffic in and around the city.Students studying in the ninth and XI standards would be selected and trained in traffic signalling and regulation. These students would assist traffic constables, posted in front of and near the schools and regulate the movement of the students and vehicles. The system would be implemented in 154 educational institutions in the corporation limits in a phased manner.Police also have plans to organise a rally involving students of these institutions to create awareness about traffic rules for them and also the public. The students would also be provided with identity cards, bearing RSP title, police sources said.
