Road safety patrols with help from Edu.insituations
Chief Traffic Warden M. Sundararajan talking to the heads of educational institutions at the CSI School in the City on Friday on the need for forming road safety patrol units.The Coimbatore City Police and the Traffic Wardens Organisation with the help of the Education Department has begun a drive to rope in educational institutions to form road safety patrols.To begin with, the Chief Traffic Warden, M. Sundararajan, on Friday had a meeting with heads of various educational institutions.The meeting was also attended by the teacher co-ordinators from every institution for forming the Road Safety Patrol (RSP) units. Under instructions from the Commissioner of Police, C.K. Gandhirajan, a compact disc titled “Uyir” containing short films on the need for wearing helmets, food board travel and other tips on road safety was screened and a copy of the CD was distributed to all the institutions for screening them in their institutions.
Mr. Gandhirajan told that the City Police have identified as many as two universities, three engineering colleges, three nursing and paramedical sciences colleges, 16 arts and science colleges, five polytechnic colleges an d 125 schools located within the City Police limits for forming the RSP.The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) R. Tamil Chandran was coordinating with the Traffic Warden’s Organisation and the Chief Educational Officer for roping in the educational institutions to ensure a semblance of discipline on the roads and to make them safer for all road-users.
The primary objective of forming this unit would be to first sensitise the student community on the rules of the road, road safety tips and would be imparted training. Then the students under RSP would be roped in for regulating the parking of vehicles and pedestrian crossing near the school zones.The city police said that the exercise would continue to involve all the educational institutions.
