‘Active Learning Methodology’ to be introduced
Students of Class VI to VII studying in Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) schools in the State will soon be taught to learn on their own. The teacher would only be a facilitator as per this new teaching method. ‘Active Learning Methodology,’ a novel concept in teaching involves letting the students evolve their own pattern of understanding a subject.Under this system, the teachers introduce the lesson for ten minutes and then the students are made to read on their own. Students will then work as pairs and discuss the important points. Later, the class will be divided into groups and the topic will be discussed. The portions in the lesson that are unclear will be cleared by the teacher.
Each student summarises the lessons in his or her own words. After learning a lesson, the students are made to formulate questions on their own. As the process involves reading, recitation, reviewing and reflection by the students, they get a complete idea regarding the subject, an SSA official says. The concept was introduced last month as a pilot study in ten schools in North Pollachi. Training for Block Resource Teachers (BRT) is on.By July 11, the BRTs will in turn train all the teachers in the State the techniques to be employed in implementing this new methodology.
