Bandh and rail roko at Irugur

Federation of Trade Unions of most of the political parties under the banner of the Irugur Railway Good Shed Workers Association has announced rail roko at major stations across the district besides a local bandh in Irugur on Monday (July 2) demanding commencement of operations at the Irugur container terminal.

Senthilraj, Convenor of the Federation of Trade Unions, in a memorandum said Coimbatore accounted for Rs 750-crore revenue by way of cargo traffic to Coimbatore and nearby areas from various places in the country. The container terminal at Irugur constructed at an outlay of Rs 13 crore has the facility to accommodate one full rake of goods train with 40 wagons with 60 tonnes at a time. The operations commenced at the goods terminal on March 24 and 26.



Unfortunately, at the insistence of a section of the clearing and forwarding agents at North Coimbatore Junction, the railway authorities continued the cargo operations at the cramped North Coimbatore terminal. As such the police have imposed restrictions on the entry of trucks into the City and they were permitted only between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.Headload workers along with their families will hold rail roko at Tirupur, North Coimbatore, Peelamedu, Singnallur, Irugur, Sulur, Somanur, Vanjipalayam and Tirupur railway stations.
