Corpn. to construct biomass gasifier crematorium
The Coimbatore Corporation will construct a biomass gasifier crematorium at Rs.1 crore, Mayor R. Venkatachalam said on Thursday. It would come up on two acres at the erstwhile garbage yard of the Corporation at Kavundampalayam. The crematorium premises would also have an open burial ground at Rs.25 lakh, but tombstones would not be permitted as it would get congested soon, he said.
The Corporation Council had passed a resolution that this facility should be provided as people in Saibaba Colony, K.K. Pudur and also Kavundampalayam on the northern border of the city had to cremate the dead at the electric crematorium at Pappanaickenpalayam or the one at Chokkampudur. The city had another electric crematorium at Athupalam on the city’s southern border. The biomass gasifier would burn wooden chips and generate energy out of it to operate the crematorium.
The Mayor said he had appealed for the crematorium and burial ground at almost all Council meetings when he was just a councillor over the last 10 years. He said that he had promised the people of his ward (No.63) that he would fight for the construction of the crematorium even when he canvassed votes during the local body elections in October last year.“At last, we are getting this facility. We want to complete it by the end of this year. The Corporation will provide Rs.1.25 lakh from its General Fund for this project,” he said.
