First free seat of Bharathiar University gets filled

Rekha J. will pursue a postgraduate degree in Animal Biotechnology at Bharathiar University free of cost. A graduate of Animal Science and Biotechnology from the Emerald Heights College for Women, Udhagamandalam, Rekha topped the university in her subject. She is the first candidate to be selected to pursue a degree at no cost, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. Thiruvasagam told. “On a recent visit to the college, I met her and found her eligible for this free seat, both in terms of academic excellence and economic status. I selected her on the spot. Her father is a labourer and her mother is a cancer patient and the family lives in poverty. Doing the course free of cost will help her and her family in a big way,” he said.

Bharathiar University has invited applications from ‘deserving’ students who wished to pursue higher education at the university free of cost. This was in pursuance of the announcement the Vice-Chancellor had made a few days ago that the university would offer 20 free seats in its departments.“Students can make out an application stating personal details and the course they wish to pursue and address it to the Special Officer, Bharathiar University”, Dr. Thiruvasagam said.Candidates should be from an economically backward family, or orphans, or poor agricultural families. They would be selected based on various criteria that would be looked into by a committee.

“The university has introduced many new courses in its departments. Tuition fee for some specialised courses are very high. A deserving candidate can make use of the facility and pursue such a course at the university at no cost. More students from poor families will benefit from this”, he said. Those interested should send in their applications by July 15. Counselling to select the 19 other candidates for various departments would be held after screening of the applications.
