Measures to controll motor hit of wild animals
The Coimbatore Circle of the Forest Department is preparing a list of spots on ghat roads where incidents of wild animals being hit by motor vehicles are common. It also plans to install sign boards and construct speed breakers.The death of a deer and a panther in the Nilgiris recently prompted the department to initiate the measures, the department sources said.The Circle has six divisions; the Pollachi Wildlife Sancutuary has two major roads cutting across the reserve forests namely the road to Parambikulam and the other to Valparai.
The Coimbatore division has very minimum stretches that are cutting across its forest wealth.Whereas, the roads cutting across the reserve forests were more in respect of the Nilgiris North, South, Gudalur divisions and the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary has kilo meters of roads bisecting the wildlife habitat.Sources added that the forest officers had been asked to compile and compare data relating to past incidents wherein wild animals were run over by vehicles and also to identify the pockets where the animals used to cross from one side of the road to the other.The department had planned to approach the highways department to construct small speed breakers at the identified spots.Efforts were on to put up adequate number of caution sign boards on either side of the roads to alert the drivers.
