Road safety programme

Gandhirajan said here on Thursday.Inaugurating a road safety programme for Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation drivers, he said that people expected safety for their lives when they were on the roads. The programme was organised by the transport corporation and the city police to sensitise the drivers to the dangers of speeding on the city roads.
‘Uyir’ – a film made by the police on accidents and ways to avoid them – was shown at the programme to tell the drivers how valuable lives were lost because of exceeding speed limits and rash driving. They were also told of the guidelines evolved by the police on preventing accidents. The Commissioner said that short running time was a major reason for the accidents. Talks with the authorities concerned could be held to revise it and avoid loss of lives on roads. Police said that even the trade unions had agreed to cooperate in this effort.
Presiding over the programme, Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Coimbatore Division I) K. Jagannathan spoke on the benefits of disciplined driving. Awards were given to eight drivers who were not involved in any accident during the 25-year service and 30 others were given certificates for blemishless service.Deputy Commissioners of Police R. Tamilchandran and L.V. Karuppuswamy, Assistant Commissioner R. Chakravarthy and transport corporation General Manager M. Ponraj were among those who participated in the programme.
